The Iconic Ampex 440C

Our fully restored Ampex 440-C 1/2” 4-track tape machine represents a direct connection to the golden era of analog recording. Introduced during the late 1960s, the Ampex 440 series became a studio standard throughout major recording facilities in the United States and was used during an era that produced countless classic records across rock, jazz, soul, folk, and film scoring. Revered for its depth, musical tape compression, and rich harmonic saturation, the 440 helped define the sound of analog recording during a period when artists and engineers relied on performance, microphone placement, and signal path craftsmanship rather than digital editing. Our machine features recently lapped heads, dual scrape flutter idler assemblies for enhanced tape stability, and meticulously restored electronics to ensure exceptional performance and reliability while preserving the unmistakable sonic character that made these machines legendary.

The Ampex 440-C plays a central role in the philosophy of Oak Street Recording Studios: combining the warmth and dimensionality of vintage recording techniques with the precision and flexibility of modern production workflows. Artists can track through an exceptional collection of vintage and boutique microphones, restored amplifiers, and carefully selected analog preamps before capturing performances either directly into our pristine modern Burl conversion system or through analog tape for additional texture, depth, and musical saturation. Rather than viewing analog and digital technologies as competing approaches, the studio is designed to integrate both seamlessly. The result is a recording environment where artists can achieve everything from clean, modern high-fidelity productions to deeply textured recordings that carry the sonic imprint of classic analog records, all within a single creative workflow.
